The reshoring jobs debate is too blunt.
The better question is not whether reshoring creates jobs. It is what kind of work returns, who performs it, and how much of it is absorbed by automation before it ever appears in employment headlines.
AI and automation are changing the reshoring equation. Companies do not need to recreate yesterday’s offshore labor model inside the United States. They need to redesign production around higher productivity, tighter quality control, faster changeovers, better forecasting, and more resilient operations.
That means reshoring may bring back work before it brings back large numbers of jobs.
KPMG’s 2026 tariff survey found that 44% of companies had invested in automation as part of their response to tariff pressure, with talent shortages persisting across advanced manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, and technical production.
Deloitte’s 2026 manufacturing outlook also points to smart manufacturing, AI, and digital supply-chain tools as major themes for manufacturers navigating the next phase of industrial transformation.
This creates a different labor model.
The jobs that matter most may be controls technicians, robotics specialists, industrial engineers, maintenance planners, trade-compliance analysts, quality leaders, data engineers, and supplier-development managers. These are not low-skill replacements for offshore labor. They are higher-leverage roles in a more automated operating system.
That is both an opportunity and a risk.
The opportunity is that automation can make U.S. production viable in categories where labor-cost comparisons previously killed the business case. The risk is that public messaging will keep promising old-style job creation while companies quietly build leaner, more technical plants.
The workforce question is therefore not whether reshoring creates employment. It is whether regions can supply the specific technical capacity reshored operations require.
AI will not eliminate the need for people in reshoring. It will punish every region that trains for the wrong jobs.
